What does Basic earnings mean?

Basic earnings is a ratio which indicates basic profitability of someone’s assets and it is used when there is a comparison of companies with differing degrees of leverage.

It is a basic calculation taking net income and dividing it by shares outstanding in order to get earnings per share.
