Children Savings Accounts
Nowadays, if you venture into a bank, there is a chance that you will see advertising for children savings accounts, or pamphlets for parents, stating what and how to tell their children and, if applicable, paperback or online material aimed especially for children reaching the age of reason who are going to soon be able to use their accounts.
On the long term, it has been statistically demonstrated that children with financial inclinations starting at an earlier age are more likely to develop into more responsible adults, being able to make use of finances better than those who have started their interaction later on in life. It has been estimated that starting with a generic children savings account, compared to a child with no such account available, would add the equivalent of five full years’ worth of experience in financial products, compared to an adult’s standpoint. Considering that success in finance use nowadays is, in its greatest part, experience, the advantage of offering your child such an account becomes obvious.

Some may worry about the “spoiled rich kid” effect that child savings accounts may have. The idea behind their worries is that children are more likely to grow up with a habit of spending lots of money if they are simply given large amounts at a certain point in their life. This is equivalent to the parable of the poor man winning the lottery and being back on the streets with a negative balance in a matter of weeks. But this can easily be dismissed, as a child savings account does not only mean availability of a lot of money at maturity.
Indeed, the account is far more versatile than that. By allowing the child to only benefit from and be able to withdraw the exceeding amount after interest has been calculated, and by allowing him or her to deposit as much as he or she may want, this from an early age, the child savings account will teach the child to understand the concept of greater future benefits. The idea of thinking ahead, which, until recently, has been thought of being specific only to adults, has been demonstrated to be applicable in children as well. A child will, of course, withdraw the entire overflow amount at first. But, after learning that by not withdrawing all of it, but keeping and, eventually, adding to the amount, the future amount that can be withdrawn increases, a mind pattern will be set for the child, and he or she will come to understand how the mechanism of greater future rewards works.

The implications, from a psychological standpoint, of such understanding need no extra emphasis. Solutions such as children savings accounts have been in use ever since the idea of savings accounts was created, albeit in different shapes and sizes, as people saw fit at the time. Initially specific only to higher classes, who would understand the idea of future planning and would want their children to be able to benefit from it as well, the possibility has nowadays extended to the entire population, if they desire to make use of it.

Creating a link between a child and the idea of his own property, with all the ups and downs that come with it, introduced in a gradual, easy to comprehend mode, will also affect social responsibility. For example, studies revealed that a child that is gradually determined to use his “property” in order to pay for miscellaneous medical bills and is taught to understand that avoiding such situations is possible , is more likely to develop awareness about counteracting future unpleasantness. The effect of a group of such children within educational institutions usually leads to an overall increase in interest for the rest of the children on such topics. All this done while the character of the child is somewhat properly developed and there is no chance of him or her becoming a worrier. Instead, it will stimulate the child into finding more and more innovative solutions to his or her problems, leading to efficiency and a stronger character.

The children savings account can be a very good first step in that direction for any parent who wishes a bright future for his child. And this is exactly every parent’s wish.
