What is a symbol?

On tickers they usually put up an abbreviation or a code that it’s unique to each company. This symbol is a code for example DOW stands for Dow Jones industrial, or NYSE which means New York stock exchange. The problem might be that the codes used as symbols aren’t universal so it take time until the investor learns them all. By knowing these symbols a person can easily check prices and analytics over the internet.
